Third Estate by Sherin Aboobucker

We, the members of the Third Estate, had suffered tremendously under the rule of King Louis XVI. We were unfairly burdened with the taille, gabelle, income tax, poll tax, and the corvée, while those haughty nobles and a particular German female danced away in their lavish ball gowns, their excessive makeup, and powdered wigs. The people whom we have entrusted our nation failed miserably in addressing the state of our nation. Our nation was bankrupt and our families were starving. We realized that our rights were infringed and our wellbeing was destroyed by a frivolous monarchy, and we took action. We believed strongly in equality, greater representation, and limits on the power of the monarchy. We took to the streets to challenge the monarchy and those who endanger us.We eventually deposed the absolutist monarchy for a constitutional one. Now, the power resides in a representative legislature (The National Assembly). The National Assembly has endowed us newer freedoms and rights. We rejoice the new government and the values which it stands for: Life, Liberty, and Fraternity. We are pleased with the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen. It has new and wonderful ideas like " law is the expression of general will , "the source of all sovereignty resides essentially in the nation " , and "men are born free and remain free and equal in rights". These were all rights which were not properly given to us by the king. We  were bonded by an age-old monarchy which took away our freedom without our consent ( Social Contract). We needed something new . Our new government is one that believes strongly in equality like no other nation. Our new government is on which respects privileges such as the freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and freedom of press. In our new government, we are delighted that we have the right to own property- something that was taken away by the backward and feudalistic practices of the nobles and clergy. We believe that our revolution will bring not only great prosperity to France, but even greater prosperity and liberty to the rest of Europe.

  1. I find it extremely offensive that you fail to acknowledge out assistance towards you guys in terms of education and general conditions of living. My eyes burn at just the mere sight that you cannot bear to follow the orders of God by maintaining the monarchy!
